How is Geopolitics Shaping Conflict Resolution in the Middle East?
Hamas has become the latest party to the Gaza ceasefire and hostage talks to express optimism about the prospects of reaching a deal. The group said a dea was “possible,” characterizing the talks as “positive and optimistic.”
To be sure, while officials caution that a deal is neither sealed nor guaranteed, the upbeat language and recent diplomatic activity reportedly points to significant momentum toward reaching a deal.
But ending conflict must be considered via its causes. And the ICRG data have been key in identifying the various sources and consequences of conflict through a longstanding list of empirically based, published studies. These include the influence of interregional inequality within countries to the negative effect of defense spending on economic growth, which is aggravated during times of internal and external conflicts.
The link to JSTOR also offers over 200 citations of the ICRG data being used in published articles to flesh out these dimensions. Have a look when time permits.
